The Tea Party exploded on the US political scene with President Barack Obama's election and scholarly research focuses on its role in national issues. However, Tea Party and property rights advocates, among others, also fiercely oppose sustainability city planning issues, recently having legislation introduced in 26 US states to stop such practices. They perceive planning as directly connected to the United Nation's 1992 document, Agenda 21: the Rio Declaration on Development and Environment. The counter-narrative suggests the UN seeks to restrict individual property rights and American sovereignty. Meanwhile, Agenda 21-related planning is favourably considered and practiced worldwide. Through a mixed-methods approach using quantitative and case-based research, we track the opposition's emergence through the introduction and sometimes adoption of state legislation. We draw conclusions and implications for research and practice using a theoretical framework routed in scholarship from planning, geography, political science, and communications/new media.

This article aims to develop a conceptual framework to address the economic dimension of right-wing populism. Moving beyond classic left-right economics and the divide between economic and cultural approaches, it argues that the political economy of right-wing populists is intertwined with cultural values in the construction of the ‘true’ people as an economic community whose well-being is in decline and under threat, and therefore needs to be restored. Looking at populist traditions across Europe and the United States, the paper emphasizes the significance of ‘producerist’ frames in economic populism. This is illustrated through an empirical analysis of differences and similarities in the economic policies and discourses of three established right-wing populist parties based in Europe (FN, SVP and UKIP), and the Tea Party and Donald Trump in the United States. We find that economic populist frames are common to all of the parties under scrutiny, albeit subject, however, to different interpretations of the producerist antagonism and groups. Our findings confirm that the intersection between economic populism and producerism provides a new—and fruitful—perspective on right-wing populism, while simultaneously demonstrating the relevance of a transatlantic approach to the study of the populist phenomenon.

Resumo: Este artigo objetiva abordar as relações entre protestos multitudinários ocorridos na última década e a crise da democracia. Procura-se refletir sobre as afinidades entre ambos fenômenos, explorando o formato de protestos atuais e alguns de seus desdobramentos. Para tanto, são analisados cinco casos de protestos: na Tailândia, no Egito, nos EUA, na Turquia e no Brasil. O texto está dividido em duas partes: i) debate sobre a possibilidade de a atuação da sociedade civil ter consequências não democráticas; ii) a apresentação de quatro dinâmicas que podem conectar protestos e erosão democrática, a partir dos casos mencionados. O artigo apresenta quatro dinâmicas por meio das quais protestos podem ter contribuído para enfraquecimento da democracia em diferentes contextos: o foco nacional; a abertura para o reaparecimento de forças autoritárias contidas na sociedade; a polarização que aumenta o custo da tolerância; e o fortalecimento do individualismo antirrepresentação.
