The rise of mycology in Asia

Abstract: Mycology was a well-studied discipline in Australia and New Zealand, Europe, South Africa and the USA. In Asia (with the exception of Japan) and South America, the fungi were generally poorly known and studied, except for the result of forays from some American and European mycologists. However, in the last 20 years, the situation has changed. With the development of Asian economies, the funding for science research and development has greatly increased. Mycological research has also diversified in many fields… Show more

“…org) has recorded the number of new species described each year. The taxonomy of the phylum Ascomycota has been updated at a fast pace over the last few years (Hyde et al 2013(Hyde et al , 2020aJaklitsch et al 2016;Maharachchikumbura et al 2016;Liu et al 2017;Ekanayaka et al 2018). Accepted families with descriptions and list of genera in the Ascomycota were provided by Jaklitsch et al (2016).…”

“…This affects the number of described species. Some studies have used slightly different morphological characters of taxa along with the phylogenetic analyses to introduce new genera (Hyde et al 2020a).…”

“…The continuous discovery of novel fungal species has significantly contributed to the revision of fungal taxa (Arzanlou et al 2007;Boonmee et al 2011;Tanaka et al 2015;Hashimoto et al 2017;Hyde et al 2018Hyde et al , 2020a. “… Phylogram generated from maximum likelihood analysis based on combined large subunit (LSU), small subunit (SSU), internal transcribed spacers (ITS), and TEF1-α sequence data representing the species of Melanommataceae. Related sequences are taken from Hyde et al [ 57 ]. Sixty-two taxa were included in the combined analyses, which comprised 3433 characters (LSU = 982 bp, SSU = 963 bp, ITS = 545 bp, TEF1-α = 943) after alignment.…”
