The Rise of GPT-3: Implications for Natural Language Processing and Beyond

Abstract: This article provides an overview of the Generative Pre-trained Transformer 3 (GPT-3) and its significance in natural language processing (NLP). A brief history of NLP and machine learning is presented before delving into the technical details of GPT-3's architecture and training process. The article also compares GPT-3 with previous generations of language models, including GPT-1 and GPT-2. Applications of GPT-3 in NLP are discussed, including text completion and generation, language translation and sentiment… Show more

“…Furthermore, they could generate natural text with contextual understanding (4). The ability of ongoing innovation in this space led to the development of large language models, powerful tools that had tremendous computational ability to analyse natural human language and generate natural language text (6). Popular and contemporary forms of these tools have included ChatGPT and Google Bard.…”

“…These systems used rule-based approaches to translate text from one language to another. These early efforts paved the way for more advanced NLP approaches, including statistical and machine learning-based methods [3]. NLP has many benefits for humans, such as facilitating communication between humans and machines, between humans and humans with different languages, and processing and presenting information from large texts.…”
