The rise of 3-d single-ion magnets in molecular magnetism: towards materials from molecules?

Abstract: Single-molecule magnets (SMMs) that contain one spin centre (so-called single-ion magnets) theoretically represent the smallest possible unit for spin-based electronic devices. These molecules hold the promise to revolutionize computing and change the methodology by which we store, employ and process information.

“…Single-ion magnets (SIMs) are simply a subclass of SMMs wherein the electronic spin term originates from a single magnetic centre [7,8]. In SIMs, the ion bearing the spin is most commonly a transition metal [9][10][11][12][13], lanthanoid [14][15][16][17][18][19][20][21][22], or actinoid [23][24][25][26][27][28][29][30].…”

“…Molecule-based nanomagnets, such as single-molecule magnets (SMMs) [1][2][3][4][5][6][7] and single-ion magnets (SIMs) [8][9][10][11][12], are strictly low-dimensional magnetic systems that exhibit magnetization blocking at low temperatures, quantum tunneling of magnetization (QTM) [13], and quantum coherence [14,15]. Accordingly, SMMs have attracted a great deal of interest as promising candidates blocking at low temperatures, quantum tunneling of magnetization (QTM) [13], and quantum coherence [14,15].…”
