The right intercostobronchial trunk: anatomical study in respect of posterior intercostal artery origin and its clinical application

Abstract: The right bronchial artery originates from the second to the fifth posterior intercostal artery forming the right intercostobronchial trunk. Various origin and types of origin, diameter and course of the right intercostobronchial trunk described and analyzed in the study offer valuable information on the procedures involving the right intercostobronchial trunk.

“…A mean number of right and left BAs were 1.44 ± 0.58 and 1.35 ± 0.54 per patient, respectively, which is consistent with previous studies [9,11–15] . Also, proportion of IBT and CBT showed similarity to previous studies [9,15–17] . More than half of patients had IBT (69.7% in the present study, 58–84% in previous studies), almost half of right BAs originated as IBT (48.2% in present study, 52–53% in previous studies), and <10% of left BAs originated as IBT (1.6% in the present study, 3.6–4% in previous studies).…”

“…[9,[11][12][13][14][15] Also, proportion of IBT and CBT showed similarity to previous studies. [9,[15][16][17] More than half of patients had IBT (69.7% in the present study, 58-84% in previous studies), almost half of right BAs originated as IBT (48.2% in present study, 52-53% in previous studies), and <10% of left BAs originated as IBT (1.6% in the present study, 3.6-4% in previous studies). The proportion of patients with CBT was variable between studies (47.7% in the present study, 33.09-86% in previous studies), and approximately one-third of both right and left BAs originated as CBT (35.2% right BA and 37.7% left BA).…”

“…Outside of this, the blood supply to essential organs, such as the lungs, may be disturbed as well. Since the right bronchial artery, which supplies the right lung, typically branches off the right 3rd PIA, any variation within the right 3rd PIA may carry consequences for the blood supply to that region [ 10 12 ]. For instance, in the current case, the 3rd PIA branched from the right DBVA which may have had downstream effects on the right bronchial artery.…”

“…These branches supply structures such as intercostal, pectoral, serratus, and deep back muscles, as well as the spinal cord and associated nerve roots, mammary glands, and skin [ 8 , 9 ]. The right bronchial artery, which supplies areas of the right lung, often originates from the 3rd PIA on the right side [ 10 12 ].…”
