“…However, the nephelometric experiments with nutrient broth showed that the beneficial effect obtained could not have been due solely to the action of Norit on the nutrient agar. Further, the suggestion of Flett et al (1945) that Norit in media will adsorb phenol and so increase the probability that a phenol treated cell will grow, cannot be supported, since Jacobs & Harris (1954) found that Norit will remove from broth only small amounts of phenol and, as shown above, it will adsorb only few cells under the same circumstances. Moreover the improved recovery of phenol treated cells was also demonstrated in broth which had been treated with Norit and the Norit then removed.…”
