The Reticulin Content of Bone Marrow in Acute Leukaemia in Adults

Abstract: Marrow reticulin was studied by trephine biopsy in 44 patients with adult acute leukaemia at presentation and subsequently during the course of their illness. The findings indicate that: (1) an increase in marrow reticulin is common at presentation in patients with both acute lymphoblastic and acute non-lymphoblastic leukaemia; (2) effective anti-leukaemic therapy results in resolution of some or all of the increased marrow reticulin and is not contraindicated, even in patients with a marked increase in marrow… Show more

“…Grade 3-4 according to the standard classification [125]: diffuse and dense increase in reticulin with extensive intersections, occasionally with only focal bundles of collagen and/or focal osteosclerosis or diffuse and dense increase in reticulin with extensive intersections with coarse bundles of collagen, often associated with significant osteosclerosis. …”

“…The following bone marrow parameters of acute myeloid leukemia and chronic myelomonocytic leukemia cases were evaluated by review of aspirate smears and/or core biopsy material: cellularity, reticulin fibrosis grade (modified Bauermeister, grade 0-4), 18 For the chronic myelomonocytic leukemia and acute myeloid leukemia ex chronic myelomonocytic leukemia cases with available material, the bone marrow aspirate smears and core biopsy specimens were reviewed for erythroid, myeloid, and megakaryocyte dysplasia, as well as megakaryocyte number. The dysplasias were scored as follows: dysplastic cells comprising o10% of a lineage ¼ 0, 10-20% ¼ 1, 20-50% ¼ 2, and 450% ¼ 3.…”

“…[13][14][15] In addition, the degree of reticulin fibrosis was evaluated in each case. The grading of bone marrow reticulin fibrosis was performed according to the system originally proposed by Manoharan et al 16 on a scale of 0-3 þ . It should be noted that 4 þ fibrosis (presence of mature collagen) can be established only by the application of a trichrome stain; this was not available in this study.…”
