The results of deep geomagnetic soundings in the West Carpathians

Abstract: The results of geomagnetic soundings in the West Carpathians are presented. The number of observation sites in this region was approximately 90. The data treatment included the calculation of single-station transfer functions and the separation of the fields into external and internal parts on some profiles. The interpretation was based on the construction of twodimensional models explaining the observed features. The observed distribution of geomagnetic induction vectors is very regular and the axis of the an… Show more

“…Since the discovery of the Carpathian Conductivity Anomaly (CCA) (Jankowski 1967), a great number of studies have been carried out to acquire new data and to understand the nature of the conductivity anomaly (e.g., Á dám et al 1997;Jankowski et al 1985;Č erv et al 1997a, b, 2001Ernst et al 2002;Jóźwiak and Ernst 2005 ;Kováčiková et al 2005a, b;Rokityansky and Ingerov 1999;Zhdanov et al 1986). Jankowski et al (2005) have recently summarized the research related to CCA and summarize well-established facts and their interpretation.…”

“…The first important results were the documentation and preliminary interpretation of the North German-Polish Conductivity Anomaly (FLEISCHER, 1954;SCHMUCKER, 1959;WIESE, 1962WIESE, , 1963JANKOWSKI, 1967) and the Carpathian Conductivity Anomaly (JANKOWSKI, 1967;JANKOWSKI et al, 1985). In these early, pioneering works very simple methods of interpretation were used, sometimes qualitative rather than quantitative.…”

“…It seems to be laterally more continuous for the Western and Ukrainian parts than for the Romanian one. The centre of the anomaly coincides more or less (with deviations not larger than 20 km) with the Pieniny Klippen Belt (Jankowski et al 1985;Zhamaletdinov 2005;Fig. 5).…”

“…Jankowski et al (1985), Ernst et al (1997), andJankowski et al (2008) interpreted it as underthrusted cataclastic sediments with saline water in the pore space. Zhamaletdinov (2005) explained it as caused by graphite.…”
