The Response Vector for Mastery Method of Standard Setting

Abstract: Proposed is a new method of standard setting referred to as response vector for mastery (RVM) method. Under the RVM method, the task of panelists that participate in the standard setting process does not involve conceptualization of a borderline examinee and probability judgments as it is the case with the Angoff and bookmark methods. Also, the RVM-based computation of a cut-score is not based on a single item (e.g., marked in an ordered item booklet) but, instead, on a response vector (1/0 scores) on items an… Show more

“…Such item booklets allow dividing the logit scale into sections of items with similar demands within each level and different demands between levels. Cut scores between two adjacent levels were calculated by averaging the highest item estimate of the lower level and the lowest item estimate of the higher level (see Dimitrov, 2022).…”

“…The classical and latent D-scoring methods were applied to important fields in educational measurement. Research was conducted in the areas of differential item functioning [30], test equating and linking [31], multistage testing [32], and standard setting [33]. The proposed methodology can be compared in future research with appropriate adaptations that involve the Ramsay quotient model.…”

“…Its disadvantages are that it does not consider the sampling error of item difficulties and that it may result in item subsets that are hard to interpret in terms of common item demands. Variants of the so-called bookmark method are an alternative (Mitzel et al, 2013;Dimitrov, 2022). Items are sorted in an item booklet by increasing difficulty.…”
