The Response to Respiratory Resistance

Abstract: The liability to fatigue of the respiratory center is a subject which needs to be studied. Davies, Haldane, and Priestley (1) were the first to investigate the manner in which breathing adapts itself to increased resistance, and the point at which the adaptation begins to fail. They showed that the normal response in man to respiratory resistance in both phases of respiration is slow and deep breathing. When the resistance is excessive respirations become progressively shallower and more frequent and the subje… Show more

“…1 In 1977, Oswalt and colleagues reported a series of adult cases involving pulmonary edema associated with a laryngeal tumour, strangulation and interrupted hanging. 2 It has been reported following foreign-body aspiration and the relief of airway obstruction from croup and epiglottitis in children.…”

“…Furthermore, a lower or more negative intrapleural pressure develops during the inspiratory phase when breathing against a resistance. The pathological consequences of obstructed breathing, namely pulmonary congestion, have been demonstrated in animals by Moore and Binger (4,5) and Barach and his associates (6)(7)(8).…”
