The response of the stilbestrol‐induced renal tumor to chemotherapeutic agents

Abstract

The inhibition of growth of the stilbestrol‐induced hamster kidney tumor by various chemotherapeutic agents was studied in vivo. 5‐Fluorouracil significantly retarded tumor growth and prolonged survival of the treated animals. The antibiotics mithramycin and dactinomycin markedly inhibited the tumor but did not prolong survival. The absence of drug toxicity in the doses used indicated that a more pronounced effect might have been obtained by retreatment at regular intervals. Cyclophosphamide at standard dosage levels did not influence tumor growth rate. The effect of vinblastine could not be properly assessed because of severe drug toxicity.
