The respiratory effects of reduction of mite allergen in the bedrooms of asthmatic children — a double‐blind controlled trial

Abstract: The results suggest that mite removal procedures may modestly improve mite-sensitive asthmatics and could perhaps be of value in exceptionally mite-sensitive and/or highly mite-exposed individuals whose response to the attempted removal should be measured.

“…To help control dust mite exposure, the 2007 National Asthma Education and Prevention Program (NAEPP) guidelines recommend installation of allergen-proof mattress and pillow encasements, washing of all bedding every 1-2 weeks in hot water, removal of stuffed toys, reduction of indoor humidity, and regular vacuuming and dusting. These strategies reduce asthma symptoms and medication requirements, and improve lung function [77,78].…”

“…Family sampling is a valid method of estimating Der p 1 exposure, particularly as more major change in allergen concentration is required for clinical effect [3]. This could considerably reduce the cost of Der p 1 sampling in the community.…”
