The Resistance Quantity in Knee Extension Movement of Exercise Bands (Thera-Band)

Abstract: Abstract. This study was carried out for the purpose of quantifying resistance demonstrated by TheraBand ® exercise bands in knee joint extension. The subjects were 35 healthy adults (19 male, 16 female), and their average age was 21.0 ± 2.3 years old. The exercise bands had 6 colors. From the lower leg nutation position in sitting on the edge of a bed, knee joints were extended to 30° and 45°, and the value of the muscle strength used in retaining those angles with the different colored exercise bands was mea… Show more

“…Six different TheraBands ® were used to manage the muscle contraction strength (exercise intensity): thin (yellow, 1.3 kg), medium (red, 1.7 kg), heavy (green, 2.1 kg), extra heavy (blue, 2.6 kg), special heavy (black, 3.3 kg), and super heavy (silver, 4.6 kg), which values formally represent the degree of strength required to stretch the rubber band 30 cm to 60 cm in the Thera-Band ® product catalogue [19]. Validation of the stiffness of each band was previously reported by the manufacturer [20][21][22].…”

“…Elastic bands for rehabilitation are characterised by portability, light resistance and versatility and are used to increase strength in rehabilitation treatment programs and sports training programs [16,20,21,22,23]. According to the results of this 6-week research, 1) squat with elastic-band increased the duration of static squat or muscular endurance, 2) the number of squat repetitions in 30 seconds increased and 3) the height of vertical jumps increased.…”

“…The subjects used a Thera-Band ® for strength training and did four exercises for the hip and knee joints. The strength training in this program was presumed to be of moderate intensity (Sakanoue and Katayama, 2007); it was performed as one or two sets of 15 repetitions of each exercise according to the subject's ability. Balance training consisted of a stepping exercise.…”
