We develop two new continuum contact models for coupled adhesion and friction, and discuss them in the context of existing models proposed in the literature. Our new models are able to describe sliding friction even under tensile normal forces, which seems reasonable for certain adhesion mechanisms. In contrast, existing continuum models for combined adhesion and friction typically include sliding friction only if local contact stresses are compressive. Although such models work well for structures with sufficiently strong local compression, they fail to capture sliding friction for soft and compliant systems (like adhesive pads), for which the resistance to bending is low. This can be overcome with our new models. For further motivation, we additionally present experimental results for the onset of sliding of a smooth glass plate on a smooth elastomer cap under low normal loads. As shown, the findings from these experiments agree well with the results from our models. In this paper we focus on the motivation and derivation of our continuum contact models, and provide a corresponding literature survey. Their implementation in a nonlinear finite element framework as well as the algorithmic treatment of adhesion and friction will be discussed in future work.

AbstrakPada makalah ini dilakukan evaluasi pemahaman mahasiswa tingkat awal terkait konsep gaya gesek yang telah mereka pelajari ketika di sekolah menengah atas. Berdasarkan pengujian awal dapat diketahui bahwa kebanyakan mahasiswa masih mengalami miskonsepsi terkait konsep gaya gesek, khususnya dalam konsep gaya gesek statis. Tingginya miskonsepsi mahasiswa terkait gaya gesek statis disebabkan oleh banyaknya literatur yang merumuskan gaya gesek statis secara tidak tepat yaitu sebagai perkalian dari koefisien gesek statis dengan gaya normalnya yang bernilai konstan. Selain itu, ungkapan matematis dari gaya gesek statis yang menggunakan simbol ketidaksamaan meningkatkan potensi miskonsepsi karena dirasa lebih sulit oleh mahasiswa seperti dinyatakan dalam penelitian Handhika, et al. (2015). Melalui pengajaran dengan rumusan gaya gesek statis yang benar menggunakan metode analogi, mahasiswa dapat memahami konsep gaya gesek dan implikasinya secara lebih baik dari sebelumnya. Sehingga dari penelitian ini diharapkan guru menggunakan buku teks yang memberikan deskripsi yang benar tentang gaya gesek. Handhika et al. (2015). Through lectures with use right formulation of the static frictional forces by using analogical method, the students can understand the frictional forces concepts and its implication better than ever. The Influence of System Dynamics on the Frictional Resistance: Insights from a Discrete Model

In order to examine the influence of system dynamics on sliding friction, we introduce the so-called microwalking machine. This model consists of a rigid body with a number of elastic contact spots that is pulled by a constantly moving base. The system slides with dry friction on a rigid substrate. The kinematic coupling of the rotation and the translation of the rigid body results in varying normal and tangential forces at the contact spots. For certain parameter ranges this leads to self-excited oscillations in the vertical direction. A particular dynamic mode occurs which is characterized by a strong correlation between low or even zero normal forces and a fast forward motion. This effect is referred to as micro-walking. In addition to an experimental rig we use numerical integration and an extensive parameter study for the analysis. In theory, the reduction of the frictional resistance reaches up to 98%. These results are confirmed by the experiments where the maximal reduction was 73%.Our model shows that micro-vibrations play an important role for the dynamic influences on the frictional resistance of systems that exhibit apparently smooth sliding. The identification of the critical parameter range enables the systematic control of frictional resistance through the adjustment of attributes such as geometry and stiffness. In addition, it is possible to deduce guidelines for how tribological test rigs should be designed in order to get reliable results.
