Introduction:<break><break>The use of electroacupuncture (EA) in post-ischemic stroke and rehabilitation has been the subject of numerous studies; however, the effect of EA on cholesterol metabolites has not been thoroughly investigated. The inflammatory response in stroke has been associated with serum cholesterol, low HDL-Cc, and high LDL-Cc levels, and early intervention has been linked to improved post-stroke rehabilitation. This study aimed to assess the impact of EA on early ischemic stroke as a modulator of total cholesterol, HDL-c, and LDL-c in the blood, its anti-inflammatory effect, and its effect on pain and stroke scales in patients in the first few days after the onset of stroke.<break> <break> Material and Method:<break> <break> A total of 90 patients with acute ischemic stroke and a first-time diagnosis of stroke will be randomized into one of three groups: an EA group, a sham EA group, and a sensory control group. All patients will receive the interventions three times a week for a total of six sessions over two weeks. Outcome measurements will include blood tests for total cholesterol, triglycerides, HDL with HDL-c cholesterol, LDL and LDL-c cholesterol, along with Visual Analog Scale (VAS), National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale (NIHSS), and Barthel Index (BI).<break> <break> Expected Outcome:<break> <break> This study will help determine the effect of EA on ischemic stroke recovery, focusing on metabolic changes in patients with early stage stroke. EA treatment might modify risk indices (HDL-c), maintain or control (LDL-c), and generate localized reperfusion of the vascular areas involved in stroke.<break> <break> Discussion:<break> <break> This randomized controlled trial will determine the ability of EA to support early stroke ischemic injury and neuro-endothelium damage, which could lead to stroke recovery in stroke scales, reveal process via modulation of the levels of total cholesterol, HDL-c, LDL-c, and triglycerides. Rationale: Cervical spondylotic radiculopathy (CSR) is a common sensory, motor, and reflex disorder. Numbness, a common subjective symptom of CSR, lacks objective quantitative indicators and recognized effective treatments, but is also difficult to recover from. We present a case report describing a traditional acupuncture treatment for CSR, utilizing a special acupuncture method and point, namely the Yunmen point. Patient concerns: A 40-year-old woman presented with unilateral arm numbness caused by CSR. Diagnoses: A diagnosis of CSR was made in the orthopedic department of a local hospital. Interventions: We attempted acupuncture at the Yunmen (LU 2) acupoint combined with neck-seven-acupoint under computed tomographic guidance. Outcomes: After 10 times treatment sessions, the patient no longer experienced weakness, coldness, or numbness in the affected upper limb. In addition, the stiffness in the neck and shoulders was reduced. On physical examination, the patient's left brachial plexus traction test was negative; reassessment of the CSR-20-point score scale showed a perfect score, and the visual analog scale score was 0. Lessons: Our report indicates that acupuncture at the LU 2 acupoint combined with neck-seven-acupoint is effective in treating numbness and coldness of the arm, and other neurological symptoms caused by cervical spondylosis. Moreover, with the appropriate acupuncture technique, the risk of acupuncture at the LU 2 acupoint can be minimized.

Acupuncture for experimental cerebral ischemia/reperfusion injury: a systematic review of methodology and reporting quality

Objectives: Preclinical research is essential to the advancement of science but susceptible to insufficient reporting and methodological shortcomings, which compromise internal validity. We aimed to systematically assess the methodological and reporting quality of studies conducted on acupuncture for experimental cerebral ischemia/reperfusion injury (CIRI). Methods: A comprehensive search in six databases was performed for animal research concerning acupuncture for CIRI. Two authors independently selected articles, extracted data, and assessed the methodological and reporting quality of identified articles using the Systematic Review Center for Laboratory Animal Experimentation (SYRCLE) tool, and Animal Research: Reporting In Vivo Experiments (ARRIVE) guideline, respectively. Results: A total of 24 studies were identified. Only 1 article (4%) achieved a decent overall rating in using SYRCLE (percentage of items with “low risk” ⩾50%). Of the 22 items on the SYRCLE tool, only 8 items (37%) were rated as “low risk” of bias in more than 50% of the included studies. Of the 39 items of ARRIVE, 20 (51%) items were rated as “low risk” in more than 50% of the included studies. Conclusions: The methodological and reporting quality of included studies was generally low, which demands further improvement. These findings should inform the development of evidence-based guidelines for future preclinical research assessing the effect of acupuncture on CIRI.
