The Reliability of Puff Topography and Subjective Responses During Ad lib Smoking of a Single Cigarette

Abstract: Puff topography and subjective measures during the ad lib smoking of a single cigarette are highly reliable. Smoking responses during a single ad lib smoking session may be useful in identifying stable individual differences in smoking reinforcement and reward.

“…The University of Wisconsin Center for Tobacco Research and Intervention smoking cessation trials include only subjects who actively sought treatment for smoking cessation (22)(23)(24). Treatment seeking is associated with high levels of tobacco dependence (50), higher number of cigarettes smoked, and perhaps higher smoking intensity as well (51). The unique features of this sample may have influenced the genetic associations observed.…”

“…Immediately after participants extinguished the cigarette, they completed post-cigarette assessments identical to the pre-cigarette assessments except for the inclusion of an additional Cigarette Evaluation Questionnaire (CEQ; see Experimental Session Measures section). As previously reported, subjective measures during the ad lib smoking of a single cigarette following normal smoking have high reliability (Perkins et al, 2012).…”

“…This paradigm is useful for identifying stable individual differences in smoking reinforcement and reward that may serve to maintain smoking behavior under typical conditions (Perkins, Karelitz, Giedgowd, & Conklin, 2012). Given prior empirical reports and theory indicating that AS is associated with greater interoceptive abilities (Evatt & Kassel, 2010;Leyro, Zvolensky, Vujanovic, & Bernstein, 2008;Perkins et al, 2010), we hypothesized that AS would predict greater negative affect reduction, positive affect enhancement, and psychological reward from smoking after statistically controlling for covariance with anxiety symptoms.…”

“…A cigarette is inserted into one side of the device and the user puffs from the opposite side of the device. With widespread reported use in the literature, it is surprising that there have only been four published studies designed to assess reliability and validity of cigarette puff data collected with the CReSSmicro™ and bench-top devices (29)(30)(31)(32). LEE et al (29) conducted two small clinical trials with the first comparing puff volume, puff duration, inter-puff interval and maximum puff velocity as measured by a CReSS device (portable or bench-top device not specified) on four different days in seven smokers.…”

“…Using a three-factor within-subject analysis of variance (measurement method × cigarette type × cigarette number) and Tukey's honestly significant difference (p < 0.05) methods both the CReSS bench-top and portable devices were found to be reliable with two caveats: 1) compared to video recording both the bench-top and CReSSmicro™ devices measured statistically significantly shorter puff durations and; 2) the benchtop CReSS device measured statistically significantly larger average and total puff volumes than the CReSSmicro™ device. More recently, PERKINS et al (32) compared puff number, total puff volume and maximum puff volume measured using a CReSS device (portable or bench-top device not specified) in 94 smokers over four sessions. Using ICC, excellent reliability (ICC > 0.86) was reported for each measured parameter.…”
