The reliability of computed tomography (CT) values and dimensional measurements of the oropharyngeal region using cone beam CT: comparison with multidetector CT

Abstract: The phantom study showed that CBCT provides limited quantitative CT values for each pixel on sliced images for differentiating air, water and soft tissues. However, the measurement of air spaces with CBCT was quite accurate.

“…To capture the same FOV in a medical CT scan, in which the beam is fan shaped, the patient has to be scanned in a linear translation movement (Angelopoulos et al, 2012). CBCT provides values that allow visualisation and differentiation between air, water, and soft tissue to a limited extent (Yamashina et al, 2008).…”

“…During this time the total radiation depends on the kV and mA values used [52,53,72], as specified in Table II. Concerning the differences of resolution between conventional CT and dental CBCT, the dental CBCT has a better geometrical resolution than that of the conventional CT [15,46,49,50,67,71]. This is the result of the different voxel sizes used in the two techniques.…”
