The Reliability of a Novel Heel-Rise Test Versus Goniometry to Assess Plantarflexion Range of Motion

Abstract: Background: Ankle plantarflexion (PF) active range of motion (ROM) is traditionally assessed in a non-weight-bearing (NWB) position with a universal goniometer. However, a convenient, reliable, low-cost means of assessing functional PF active ROM in a weight-bearing (WB) position has yet to be established. Purpose:To compare the intra-and interrater reliability of PF active ROM measurements obtained from a goniometric NWB assessment, and a functional heel-rise test (FHRT) performed in WB.Study Design: Reliabil… Show more

“…All ankle joint angles were measured barefoot by a female physical therapist. In this study, ankle dorsiflexion and plantarflexion range of motion (ROM) were measured using a method reported to be more reliable than using a goniometer [ 16 , 17 ]. The ROM of ankle dorsiflexion was measured using the following method (Fig.…”

“…Active PF ROM is measured with a universal goniometer in supine position using fibula and fifth metatarsal as reference marks 47 48. The player is instructed to maintain extended knees throughout the movement, and to perform a sequence of six maximal active PF cycles from a neutral dorsiflexion (DF) position, of which the final three trials are registered.…”
