The Reliability and Validity of the Coopersmith Self-Esteem Inventory-Form B

Abstract: The purpose of this study was to determine the test-retest reliability and concurrent validity of the short form (Form B) of Coopersmith Self-Esteem Inventory. The subjects were 140 children from seven classes in fourth through seventh grades. The criterion measures for validity included sociometric questions, teachers' rankings for popularity, and teachers' ratings for self-esteem. It was found that the test-retest reliability coefficients over a two-month period for the seven classes ranged from .72 to .85, … Show more

“…The SEI (Form C) is a norm-referenced measure, which has 25 items to assess perceptions of peers, parents, school, and self among adolescents. The test-retest reliability coefficients of the SEI have been reported to be 0.88 [25,26], 0.80 and 0.82 [27], and 0.76 to 0.85 [28]. The Cronbach alpha coefficient for the instrument's internal consistency has been reported as 0.84, and the split-half reliability as 0.80 [29].…”

“…The global scale score used in these analyses was found to be reliable (α = 0.87). The CSEI has also been shown to have both convergent and discriminant validity (Blascovich & Tomaka, 1991;Chiu, 1985;Johnson, Redfield, Miller, & Simpson, 1983;Roberson & Miller, 1986). An earlier version of the scale was shown to have construct validity (Kokenes, 1974(Kokenes, , 1978.…”
