The Relevance of Discursive Strategies to Information Evaluation Practices

Abstract

Inaccurate information has become a widespread phenomenon in recent media. Misinformation, disinformation, or “fake news,” to name just a few of the most visible types of inaccurate information, are experiencing a rebirth and change of shape in our times of new media technologies. Their impact is detrimental to many areas of life, in particular to our ability to assess facts correctly and make good decisions based on them. As a result, it is imperative for people to have access to reliable approaches for conducting information evaluation. Drawing on scholarship in discourse and rhetorical studies my paper suggests how discursive strategies, a key concept in these convergent areas, can improve approaches to information evaluation.
