“…White-spored forms of barley yellow rust have not previously been reported but spore colour mutants occur in several cereal rust fungi (Day, 1974) and a single gene change appears sufficient to produce such mutants (Newton et al, 1930). The origin of a white-spored mutant of wheat yellow rust has been noted independently on at least two occasions (Brown & Sharp, 1970;Johnson & Taylor, 1975). Thus deliberate screening of large populations of barley yellow rust, as carried out here, might be expected to reveal such mutants.…”
