The Relative Merits of Acute Phase Proteins in the Recognition of Inflammatory Conditions

Abstract: SUMMARY.A study has been undertaken on the relative merits of a variety of acute phase proteins in the assessment of patients with inflammatory conditions. Five acute phase proteins (c.-antitrypsin, aJ-antichymotrypsin, orosomucoid, haptoglobin and C-reactive protein) and the ESR were measured in 171 patients presenting to the gastroenterologists (gastrointestinal disease: 130, other disease: 41). Assessment of the sensitivity and specificity of the proteins and the ESR showed a,-antichymotrypsin to be the mos… Show more

“…The fact that plasma PLP is inversely correlated with a 1 -antichymotrypsin, an index of acute phase status 22 in both age groups, suggests that acute phase status may be a major confounding factor, affecting plasma PLP at all ages. Since this is true even for plasma antichymotrypsin levels below 0.65 g l −1 , the effect seems not to be confined to severely abnormal acute phase status.…”

“…Plasma urea and creatinine were measured on a Roche Cobas Bio centrifugal analyser with Roche kit reagents 10 ; plasma a 1 -antichymotrypsin were measured on the same analyser, with Dako Ltd (High Wycombe, Bucks, UK) reagents 10 . The choice of a 1 -antichymotrypsin as an acute phase marker has been validated 14 . Diet records were coded at SCPR and were used to calculate individual daily nutrient intakes from tables, using a specially developed nutrient databank, based on standard food composition tables.…”

“…Albumin was assayed by using antibodies from Incstar (Winnersh, Buckinghamshire, United Kingdom) and Seronorm standards (Nycomed, Birmingham, United Kingdom). ACT is a marker of the acute phase reaction that can indicate acute, chronic, and subclinical infections (35,36). ACT was measured by using Dako (High Wycombe, Buckinghamshire, United Kingdom) antibodies with Serotec (Kidlington, Oxon, United Kingdom) calibrators according to the method of Calvin and Price (35).…”
