THE RELATIVE ABUNDANCE OF PUPAE OF THREE BLACK‐FLY SPECIES (SIMULIUM SPP.) ON DIFFERENT DIAMETERS OF STRINGS

Abstract: The relative abundance of 3 black-fly species Siraulium hargreavesi, S. cervicornutum and S. damnosum s.[. occupying 4 sizes of polythene strings (0.4, 1.5, 2.5 and 5 mm diam.) were studied in the river Assob, Nigeria. An analysis voortof variance showed no discernible substrate preference for S. damnosum s.l. However, S. hargreavesi and S. cervicornutum were most abundant on the large diameter strings, because of their greater surface area available for colonisation. When the abundance per unit area was calcu… Show more

“…Natural substrates are difficult to standardize and, as a result, artificial substrates have been used to capture larvae. These include conical traps (Phillipson, 1956(Phillipson, , 1958Williams & Obeng, 1962;Johnson & Pengelly, 1966), polythene strips (Williams & Obeng, 1962;Pegel & Rihm, 1976;Gersabeck & Merritt, 1979;de Moor et al, 1986;Das etal., 1989), fabric (Tarshis, 1966), ceramic tiles (Lewis & Bennett, 1974, 1975Gersabeck & Merritt, 1979), spherical balls (Walsh etal., 1981) and string (Roberts, 1983(Roberts, , 1986. The effectiveness of a given substrate varies with the species tested.…”

“…They similarly differ in their preference for artificial substrates (Gersabeck & Merritt. 1979;Roberts, 1983Roberts, , 1986. Thus the substrate availability must have an important effect on their microdistribution in the river.…”

“…This is resulting from suitable micro-environments enhanced by the fast flow and turbulence created as the water flows down the rocky embankment down to the lowland plateau. It is also due to abundant suitable natural substrates which the immature forms of the vector colonize [13,14]. The ecological distribution of breeding sites of black flies is determined by the availability of fast flowing water body, presence of suitable substrates and levels of pollution in the ambient environment.…”
