The Relationships of Onset and Exacerbation of Pustulosis Palmaris et Plantaris to Smoking and Focal Infections

Abstract: Clinical data, including focal infection and habitual cigarette smoking, were obtained from 203 male patients with pustulosis palmaris et plantaris (PPP) (age: 43.3 +/- 13.4) and 266 female patients (age: 44.0 +/- 13.7) for the 20 years from 1975 through 1994 to evaluate the relationship between the onset or severity of PPP and smoking. Seasonal incidences of onset were also studied. The incidence of onset of PPP symptoms was highest in June, when it is the most humid in Japan, and lowest in December. The most… Show more

“…In PPP, a focal infection such as tonsillitis is considered a major factor in the occurrence and persistence of PPP [29]. We confirmed the normal bacterial flora in their throat but no pathogenic bacterium such as Staphylococcus aureus or β-streptococcus.…”

“…Considering that BaP is present in tabacco smoke and in the surrounding environment, and that smoking is an aggravating factor in inflammatory skin diseases such as psoriasis [9][10][11][12], acne [13], and palmoplantar pustulosis [14][15][16], which are associated with neutrophil infiltration, we hypothesized that BaP might be capable of inducing interleukin (IL)-8 (a potent neutrophil chemoattractant) and other proinflammatory cyto/chemokines from normal human epidermal keratinocytes (NHEKs). The aim of the present study was to clarify whether or not BaP was able to activate AhR signaling pathways in NHEKs leading to ROS and proinflammatory cyto/chemokines production, which, to our knowledge, was previously unreported.…”

“…In general, the disease is persistent and painful, causing the functional impairment of patients. [59][60][61][62] Because PPP shares some common features with pustular psoriasis, some authors consider it a localized form of this disease.…”
