The Relationship of the Antigenic Determinants Expressed by Rat Lymphoid Cells to Their Participation in Graft‐versus‐host Reactions

Abstract: Summary. The relationship between the graft-versus-host reactivity of lymphocytes from F2 hybrid and backcross rats and their susceptibility to inter-parental strain alloantisera has been investigated. Apart from associations between the immunological responsiveness of individual rats and the extent of alloantiserum susceptibility of their lymphocytes, selective reactivity of groups of lymphocytes that were separable from the general population by means of their alloantiserum susceptibility was observed. Those … Show more

“…The relationship of the target antigens examined in these experiments to MHS determinants can be established only by demonstrating correlation between the presence of an antigen and the capacity of cells expressing it to engage in MHS-regulated activities. The accompanying paper reports relationships between possession of target antigens and the ability of lymphocytesto initiate and respond in graft-versus-host reactions which suggest that these antigens are closely related to MHS determinants (McCullagh, 1985).…”

“…Class 1 major histocompatibility system (MHS) antigens have generally been assumed to be uniformly expressed on the lymphocytes of any individual despite reports suggesting that the level of expression of MHS determinants on Fl hybrids' lymphocytes may be less than on parental strain cells (Galfre et al, 1977). This and the succeeding paper (McCullagh, 1985) present data which suggest that MHS determinants are not expressed equally on all of a rat's lymphocytes.…”
