The relationship of serum visfatin levels with clinical parameters, flow-mediated dilation, and carotid intima-media thickness in patients with ankylosing spondylitis

Abstract: Background/aim: Atherosclerotic heart diseases can occur at an early age in patients with ankylosing spondylitis (AS). Flow-mediated dilation (FMD) and carotid intima-media thickness (cIMT) values are reliable markers for early detection of subclinical atherosclerosis in patients with AS. We aimed to investigate the relationship between visfatin levels and indirect markers of subclinical atherosclerosis and endothelial dysfunction in patients with AS. Materials and methods:Forty-two patients diagnosed with AS … Show more

“…There was a positive association between visfatin value with BADAI and BASFI in both cases groups. These findings partially agree with Baykara et al (17) who found positive relationship between visfatin and BADAI and BASFI in AS cases. Also, partially agree with Hulejová et al (16) who showed that visfatin levels had positive correlation with BADAI in nr-axSpA cases not in AS cases, which can be explained by the different study design.…”

“…Our study revealed that, there were increased visfatin levels among cases with AS and nr-axSpA when compared to control persons (p < 0.001). This partially agrees with few studies that demonstrated significantly greater serum visfatin levels in AS cases than in healthy control (HC) (15,16,17) . On the other hand, only one study had measured visfatin serum level in nr-axSpA patients and reported that there were nonsignificant higher visfatin levels in nr-axSpA patients than in HC (16) .…”

“…In addition, visfatin increases the expression of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) by activating the PI3K/Akt, ERK1/2, p38 MAPK, and JNK1/2 signaling pathways, which induces endothelial angiogenesis [ 71 ]. It has been shown that an increase in the level of visfatin is associated with an increase in cIMT, so it can be considered a marker of subclinical atherosclerosis [ 72 ].…”

“…Although spine involvement is more frequent, joint, extra-articular regions, and entheses are also affected. In individuals with AS, an increase in disability level and a decrease in quality of life are observed [ 1 , 2 ].…”
