Introductions of freshwater fish into French rivers have been carried out with increasing frequency in the last decades. Thus, the potential impact of these introductions is of major concern for biologists and fishery managers. Knowledge of the degree of saturation of a community provides an important basis for understanding how the community reacts or will react to the introduction of new species. In this paper, we compare local and regional freshwater fish species richness in similar sizes tributaries and coastal rivers located in the same biogeographic region (North-Western France). We show 1) that species richness is greater for tributaries than for coastal rivers on both local (station) and regional (catchment) scales, and 2) that, whatever the rivers studied (tributaries or coastal rivers), there is a significant, positive linear relationship between local species richness and regional species richness. These findings suggest that local, and probably regional, freshwater fish communities in North-Western French rivers are unsaturated and thus, that major impacts on the community, such as short-term extinctions, are not to be expected. However, competition for food and space, prédation, introduction of exotic parasites and diseases, could also affect some native species.

RÉSUMÉL'analyse des variations de richesse en espèces piscicoles autochtones le long des gradients longitudinaux de quatre ensembles hydrographiques français met en évidence un accroissement amont-aval similaire par type de bassins (grands bassins de la Seine et du Rhône et fleuves côtiers breton et du Languedoc-Roussillon). Les richesses spécifiques sont comparables à l'amont (0 à 4 km de la source) et diffèrent significativement plus en aval. Dans les deux grands bassins, la pente est le premier facteur explicatif de la variation de la richesse en espèces autochtones, suivi de la distance à la source, de l'altitude et de la largeur. A une échelle d'espace supérieure, le positionnement géographique (latitude) n'a pas d'effet significatif. Dans ces bassins, la richesse en espèces autochtones serait d'abord régulée par les conditions prévalant aux échelles locales et de la zonation.Mots-clés : richesse spécifique, gradient longitudinal, poissons, bassins français, descripteurs physiques. PATTERNS OF FISH SPECIES RICHNESS IN FOUR FRENCH CATCHMENTS. SUMMARYThe richness in autochthonous river fish species increased in a similar way within the two types of catchment examined : large basins (Seine and Rhône) and coastal basins (Brittany and Languedoc-Roussillon). Species richness were similar when the distance from the source was less than 4 km, and differed significantly in the downstream part. In the two large river basins, the variability of autochthonous species richness is explained firstly by slope and secondariiy by distance from the source, altitude and river width. On a large scale, géographie position as indicated by latitude had no significant effect. Within thèse basins, richness of species seems to be controlled mainly by the environmental conditions that prevail at the local and zone scales.

The use of a parsimony algorithm as a method for graphically representing ichthyofaunal distribution and co-occurrence in an urban stream was evaluated using an extensive database of 23 fish species from the freshwater reaches of the Bronx River, New York, USA. The method, based on the idea of considering each sampling station as a "taxon" and the presence or absence of each fish species as a "character state" of that "taxon," resulted in a single most parsimonious tree from which both species distributions throughout the river and the co-occurrence of the fish species at each of eight stations could be clearly visualized and evaluated. The nesting of the stations obtained by this procedure was compared with results from hierarchical clustering, detrended correspondence analysis, and nonmetric multidimensional scaling. This parsimony analysis technique provided information congruent with the above mentioned multivariate methods; in addition, it provided a unique graphical representation of community structure, a representation that is not readily available from traditional multivariate analysis program packages.
