The relationship of a type of Mycoplasma isolated from tissue cultures to a new human oral Mycoplasma

Abstract: A previously unidentified type of Mycoplasma found as a contaminant in tissue cultures and in a culture of Eaton agent, is identical with a newly recognized human oral type.I am indebted to Drs Herdersheê and Chanock for sending me their cultures and relevant information.

“…The similarity of certain tissue culture contaminants isolated by Hayflick to a new oral type (Herdersche6, Ruys & van Rhijn, 1963) was reported previously (Lemcke, 1964b E) and from the human throat (strains s, BM, 898/2) were closely similar, the only difference being in the intensity of the precipitation band nearest the antigen wells. This may have been due to the better preservation of a labile antigenic component in some suspensions than in others or it may have reflected differences in the amount of a particular antigen present in different strains.…”

“…dence of antigenic similarity among the human prototypes when they were examined by this method. However, these organisms share related antigens which are demonstrable by other serological techniques such as CF, IHA, and gel diffusion (50,154,155,156,263,265,266). Examples of antigenic relatedness are shown in Tables 6 and 7 (263).…”

“…Another mycoplasma, first isolated from tissue cultures (116, 141a, 154, 155, 156) has recently been found to be a common inhabitant of the oropharynx (50, 124, 263) and has been demonstrated to be a separate species (50,124,155). This mycoplasma has been named M. orale by t Large-colony strains as distinct from T strains.…”
