Understanding the motivators of travel satisfaction is essential for designing attractive public transport systems. This study investigates the key drivers of satisfaction with public transport and their relationship with travel frequency and willingness to recommend public transport to others, hence contributing specifically by analysing the influence of social norms in travel use. A large-scale passenger satisfaction survey collected in six European cities and structural equation modelling validates the framework across different travel cultures. The study found that travel satisfaction is positively related to i) accessibility measures, e.g. extent of network coverage, travel speed and service frequency, ii) perceived costs, e.g. reasonable ticket prices, and iii) norms, i.e. perceived societal and environmental importance of public transport. These findings were consistent across all six cities and across different user types based on use frequency of public transport and private car. Specifically, the willingness to recommend public transport to others was significantly related to public transport use at a similar level as overall satisfaction. Finally, the study found significant differences in satisfaction across respondents' socio-economic characteristics as young respondents and students were less satisfied with service quality than middle-aged and elderly respondents despite more frequent use. This suggests structural problems in public transport because travel habits formed in early life shape travel behaviour throughout life. Hence, it is important to address the needs of these user groups to ensure public transport ridership in the future. The results bear important policy implications for planners in not only focusing on traditional measures for optimising operations, but also branding public transport as an environmentally and socially important transport mode in metropolitan areas.

For practical reasons, surveys that aim for a large number of respondents tend to restrict themselves to closed-ended responses. Despite potentially bringing richer insights, the use of open-ended questions poses great challenges in terms of extracting useful information while significantly increasing the analysis time. Nevertheless, automatic text analysis techniques speed up the analysis of open-ended responses. In this research, we explore the potential to use techniques in topic modelling [Latent Dirichlet Allocation (LDA) and Supervised LDA (sLDA)] to extract information from open-ended responses. This is compared to the information obtained from closed-ended responses, accomplished using a questionnaire that measures the intention to use shared autonomous vehicles (SAVs). Two versions of the questionnaire-Ver_OE and Ver_Lk were used, with open-ended and Likert scales measuring the same attitudes in the alternative versions. Factors were extracted for closed-ended questions. For questions common to both versions of the questionnaire, respondents answering Ver_OE had a higher positive attitude towards autonomous vehicles. These attitudinal questions were placed after the open-ended questions. When evaluating the performance of the models that predict the intention to use SAVs, models estimated using Ver_OE performed better. This increased further with the inclusion of the information extracted from the open-ended responses using both, the unsupervised (LDA) and supervised (sLDA) methods. No improvement was observed in the model for Ver_Lk. These indicate the potential for the use of open-ended questions to measure attitudes and topic modelling to extract information from these responses.

This study investigates the behavioral drivers underlying the adoption of a multimodal travel information mobile app. The hypothesized framework is validated empirically through the case-study of Madrid. Madrid’s Public Transport real-time information app (“Mi Transporte”) allows users to obtain customized and automated information. A three-wave survey containing questions aligned with the Theory of Planned Behavior was conducted in 2015 and 2016 with a representative sample of transit users. Data analysis includes a factor analysis and a structural equation model to validate the hypotheses. The model assumes that the intention to use the app can be explained as a function of attitudinal factors and respondent characteristics. Results show that the app adoption is correlated with the intention of the users to adopt it and with their willingness-to-pay; the users’ intentions can be explained by various factors like user’s expectations on the app, affinity for technology (technophilia) and the previous use of other transport apps. The roles of search functionalities, side-mode information, time saving skills and the importance of the Level of Service (LOS) are also analyzed in the model. Relations between user characteristics and latent variables are subsequently explained as well as the ex-post satisfaction and change in travel patterns to measure the impact on the transport behavior of the app users. The study provides a better understanding of app adoption based on traveler characteristics, the attributes of the app and the perception of its capabilities.
