This paper examines the widespread contention that, as a result of their cultural and educational backgrounds, students from Asia lack the critical thinking skills required when they study abroad at Western universities. It scrutinises this view from two perspectives. First, it problematises the use of Asia as a monolithic entity, arguing that the stereotyping of Asian students as uncritical is an act of Othering that fails to recognise the cultural and social diversity of such a large group of people. Second, it looks at studies of the critical thinking skills of Asian students to determine whether there is empirical evidence that they do indeed lack these fundamental cognitive abilities. From a comprehensive review of the literature, it finds that most of the specific skills and dispositions included within the umbrella of critical thinking can be found in equal or greater measure in the traditions, cultures and education systems of many Asian countries. Much of the supposed paucity of critical thinking amongst international Asian students can be explained by the fact that they are carrying out their studies in a foreign language, which has been shown to have a significantly negative impact on academic performance.

Effects of Microteaching Multiple-Representation Physics Lesson Study on Pre-Service Teachers’ Critical Thinking

A research on the effects of the microteaching Multiple-Representation Lesson Study (MRLS) on pre-service Physics teachers’ critical thinking was conducted using a pre-test-post-test quasi-experimental design. Eighteen fourth year Bachelor of Secondary Education-Physical Science majors participated in the research. The experimental group employed the microteaching MRLS while the control group implemented the Traditional Instructional Planning Approach (TIPA). Data were gathered from multiple sources such as researcher-made written tests, interviews, diaries, and field notes. The Mann-Whitney U test was utilized to ascertain statistical difference between the experimental and the control group. Results revealed significant differences in the scores between the two groups in the overall critical thinking and on its sub-domains. Findings indicate beneficial effects of the microteaching MRLS in developing pre-service teachers’ critical thinking. Abstract-Although Jordan has made great efforts to develop students" EFL writing skills in general and creativity in writing in particular, studies revealed that Jordanian students still had problems with creativity in writing. However, few studies have been conducted on creativity in EFL writing. Therefore, this study investigated the barriers that hinder student"s creativity in EFL writing. This qualitative study involved EFL secondary stage students in Jordan. Eight EFL male students were selected with the help of convenience sampling. The findings show that low-scoring EFL students' responses could be categorized into three themes, namely, inadequate vocabulary, lack of unity and coherence and lack of support. The study contributes to the literature concerning creativity in EFL writing in the context of Jordan and in the Arab region. Jordanian educators need to consider the constraining factors of creativity such as lack of vocabulary in order to enhance students" creativity in writing.
