The Relationship between Sit-to-stand Frequency and Anaerobic Threshold Determined by Cycle Ergometer

Abstract: Abstract. [Purpose] This study examined the adjustment of work load in the sit-to-stand exercise (STSE). [Subjects] The subjects were twenty-nine healthy young males, average age of nineteen.[Methods] Subjects did STSE and cycle ergometer exercise on the same day. The STSE protocol was standing-up frequencies set from 6 to 30 (times per minute),with an exercise time of three minutes at each frequency. The anaerobic threshold (AT) was determined on a cycle ergometer with a ramp protocol. The items measuring… Show more

“…The standing-up speed was externally controlled by audio signals via a metronome and visual signals using down and up arrows on the computer screen. The suspension criteria for the ISTS test were as follows: 1) when the general indications for stopping an exercise test, such as shortness of breath, wheezing, or leg cramps, in the ACSM's Guidelines for Exercise Testing and Prescription were met [1]; 2) when the heart rate (HR) reached 85 % of the predicted maximum HR [5]; and 3) when the timing given by the metronome was missed for three times in a row [14,20,22].…”

“…ercise load intensity can be easily adjusted by changing the STS speed or the seat's height [14,20]. With its simplicity, an STS exercise has been widely developed to evaluate knee extensor muscle strength for older adults in the clinical setting or for research purposes [13].…”

“…On the other hand, the sit-to-stand exercise (STSE) which is part of an individual’s activity of daily living, and uses the repetitive motion of standing-up and siting down on a chair 6 , 7 ) . The STSE, which requires only a chair and small space, can be performed by a large number of patients, and the exercise load intensity can be easily adjusted by changing the standing up frequency 6 , 7 ) .…”
