The relationship between serum thyrotropin and components of metabolic syndrome

Abstract: Abstract. To explore the relationship between serum thyrotropin and components of metabolic syndrome in a Chinese cohort. A total of 1534 adult inhabitants in DaDong district of Shenyang were asked to fulfill the questionnaire, complete physical examination and OGTT. Blood samples were collected to test thyrotropin (TSH), fasting plasma glucose (FPG), OGTT 2h PG, fasting insulin (FINS), triglyceride (TG) and high density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C). “…28 Unlike our study Lai et al observed significantly higher TG and lower HDL-C in patients with SCH than euthyroid individuals in their study on 1534 Chinese adults. 29 In our study LDL-C and TC were positively correlated with TSH level (p value<0.05) (Figure 2 and 3) in patients of SCH. Santi et al also observed a positive correlation of LDL-C and TC with TSH such patients.…”

“…In younger populations, associations with other components of the metabolic syndrome such as TC, triglycerides, blood pressure, and waist circumference were observed (5,6,7,8,9). In subgroup analyses of persons 70 years and older, Asvold et al found a significant association between serum TSH and blood pressure (diastolic blood pressure in men and women, and systolic blood pressure only in women).…”

“…30 Our results were in association with Lai et al, where the higher levels of TGL and Lower HDL levels were observed. 31 Similarly, Iqbal et al, also claimed similar results in SCH patients after performing a follow-up study in males, whereas increased cholesterol, LDL cholesterol and apo B levels in females. 32 On the contrary, total cholesterol levels were not found to be elevated in Rottedam study.…”
