RESUMO:No século XXI, o notebook atingiu o maior auge das criações tecnológicas, tendo-se em vista o fato de ser compacto e poder ser facilmente carregado. Entretanto, o uso excessivo, a má postura e a limitação da ergonomia do notebook podem favorecer a ocorrência de lesões musculoesqueléticas. O estudo teve como objetivo investigar a ocorrência de lesões musculoesqueléticas em universitários que utilizam notebook. Trata-se de um estudo de campo, descritivo, exploratório, transversal, de abordagem quantitativa. A amostra correspondeu a 246 indivíduos de uma instituição privada de ensino. O instrumento utilizado foi um questionário com 17 questões fechadas. Os critérios de inclusão foram a utilização de notebook, com tempo mínimo de 60 min/dia, e a não existência de histórico de lesões em extremidades superiores. Do total de entrevistados, 43% se encontram entre a faixa etária de 18 a 19 anos; 58,9% não realizam atividades físicas; 65,8% não utilizam períodos de pausas e alongamentos; 39,6% utilizam o notebook de uma a duas horas por dia; 40,2% adotam a posição sentada, com o notebook sobre a mesa, gerando desconforto na coluna lombar (42,6%) e cervical (36,17%). Quanto à mão dominante, 84,4% são destros. A alta ocorrência de dores na cervical e lombar pode estar relacionada ao posicionamento mais adotado (computador portátil sobre a mesa), posicionamento que favorece o aumento da flexão cervical. A dor lombar é influenciada pelos longos períodos na posição sentada o que enseja o aumento da compressão nos discos intervertebrais. As dores no punho direito podem ser explicadas pelo excesso de digitação no lado dominante. PALAVRAS-CHAVE:Dor; Ergonomia; Lesões. Problem statement:In the recent years, there has been an increase in incidence of musculoskeletal complaints among college students. Potential risk factors for this might be increased use of computers. The purpose of this study was to examine among college students (a) the prevalence of musculoskeletal pain and (b) the association of musculoskeletal pain with computer use and physical activity performed during last one week. Approach: A cross-sectional study was performed among college students aged 19-27 years in the first through third years of their college study. Using random sampling, two surveys, the Boston University Computer and Health Survey and the International Physical Activity Questionnaire with informed consent were distributed to 200 college students. Out of 178 surveys returned, 170 surveys were found to be acceptable. Results: About 88% (149/170) of the respondents reported musculoskeletal complaints in the two weeks prior to completing the survey. The prevalence of musculoskeletal pain was higher in female 90% than in male students 76%. Although there was no statistically significant association between the type of computer and musculoskeletal pain, the prevalence of musculoskeletal pain was higher for students using laptop ( 90% ) when compared to those using both desktop and laptop and desktop only (87 and 86%) respectively. There was no statistically significant correlation for musculoskeletal pain with hours of computer use per day, type of computer used and level of physical activity. Conclusion: This study strengthens the findings that musculoskeletal pain is common among college students but it is not influenced by computer use and level of physical activity. Future research should continue on larger students' sample to better understand the musculoskeletal complaints, physical activity and computer use and to find whether these factors are related.

Gender, Cultural Influences, and Coping with Musculoskeletal Pain at Work: The Experience of Malaysian Female Office Workers

Purpose Workers with musculoskeletal pain (MSP) often continue to work despite their condition. Understanding the factors that enable them to remain at work provides insights into the development of appropriate workplace accommodations. This qualitative study aims to explore the strategies utilised by female Malaysian office workers with MSP to maintain productive employment. Methods A qualitative approach using thematic analysis was used. Individual semi-structured interviews were conducted with 13 female Malaysian office workers with MSP. Initial codes were identified and refined through iterative discussion to further develop the emerging codes and modify the coding framework. A further stage of coding was undertaken to eliminate redundant codes and establish analytic connections between distinct themes. Results Two major themes were identified: managing the demands of work and maintaining employment with persistent musculoskeletal pain. Participants reported developing strategies to assist them to remain at work, but most focused on individually initiated adaptations or peer support, rather than systemic changes to work systems or practices. A combination of the patriarchal and hierarchical cultural occupational context emerged as a critical factor in the finding of individual or peer based adaptations rather than organizational accommodations. Conclusions It is recommended that supervisors be educated in the benefits of maintaining and retaining employees with MSP, and encouraged to challenge cultural norms and develop appropriate flexible workplace accommodations through consultation and negotiation with these workers.
