Objective: The one-child policy has existed in China for more than 30 years. It brought benefits to the country's economic development and reduced the magnitude of the population within a short period. However, it has led to the emergence of a significant number of parents who have lost their only child, referred to as shiduers (失独者). This study explored the symptoms of prolonged grief disorder (PGD) among shiduers and their relationship with the social support shiduers received after they lost the child, specifically accounting for the disparity between rural and urban areas. Method: In total, 405 participants were recruited with a mean age of 60.37 years (SD = 7.78). Around 68.75% were female, and 58.66% were urban shiduers. They were asked to complete a series of self-reported questionnaires, including demographic information, the Social Support Rate Scale, and the Prolonged Grief-13. Results: First, 29.63% of the participants (N = 120) fulfilled the International Classification of Diseases (11th rev.) diagnostic criteria for PGD symptoms; second, PGD symptoms of shiduers were negatively related to social support, including objective support, subjective support, and the availability of support; and third, urban/rural location moderated the effect of objective support on the PGD symptoms of shiduers, but not the effect of subjective support on PGD symptoms. Furthermore, the simple-slope tests indicated that the shiduers in rural areas benefited most from objective support. Conclusions: The present results revealed high rates of PGD symptoms in Chinese shiduers, and our findings highlight the important role of urban/rural location in the relationship between social support and PGD symptoms. Clinical Impact StatementThis study could help government leaders and primary health care workers to create targeted programs for shiduers in the future, especially those living in rural areas.

Suicide is an unfortunate multifactorial problem impacting families and communities. Many young lives are lost every year due to suicide. There is an urgent need to understand the multifactorial risk factor mechanisms providing vulnerability to suicidal behavior for early detection of impending incidents, monitoring, and prevention. This review aims to give an insight into the various biochemical and genetic markers along with the associated socio-economic factors and mental disorders which contribute to increased suicide risk. The role of different neurotransmitter-associated pathways such as serotonin, gamma aminobutyric acid (GABA), and norepinephrine pathway, and pathways involving the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis, lipid metabolism, and neuroinflammation in suicide ideation and risk have been explored. Understanding of these predisposing factors and associated pathways could help identify the risk and lead to the development of drugs/ treatment to prevent suicides.

Introduction Parents who have lost their only child and over the age of 60 are known as elderly shidu parents. This study aimed to investigate predictors of prolonged grief disorder (PGD) among Chinese elderly shidu parents. Methods Two hundred and ninety‐eight elderly shidu parents from Shenyang were included in this cross‐sectional study. Participants completed a questionnaire including the Prolonged Grief questionnaire‐13 (PG‐13), the PTSD (post‐traumatic stress disorder) Checklist for DSM‐5 (PCL‐5), the Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scales (CES‐D), the Self‐Rating Anxiety Scale (SAS), and the Perceived Stress Scale‐10 (PSS‐10). Multiple linear regression was used to examine socio‐demographic, bereavement‐related and perceived stress associated with PGD symptoms. Results The prevalence of PGD among Chinese elderly shidu parents was 13.8%. Among the 41 PGD patients, 29, 39, 36 patients had comorbidity of PTSD, depressive symptoms and anxiety, respectively. Perceived stress, higher educational level, lower annual household income, perceived stigma, violent death of the child, and being in debt were associated with severer PGD symptoms. Discussion The present study revealed the prevalence of PGD and the important role of PGD in diagnosing other mental disorders in Chinese elderly shidu parents. Providing financial help, eliminating social stigma, and stress should be included in PGD prevention among Chinese elderly shidu parents.
