The relationship between physical capacity and match performance in elite Australian football: A mediation approach

Abstract: The aim of this study was to verify if yo-yo intermittent recovery test (level 2) (yo-yo IR2) score is linked to Australian football (AF) performance through match exercise intensity. Six week prospective study design. Twenty-one data sets were recorded from nine individual players that completed the yo-yo IR2, and played an Australian Football League match in the first five rounds of the 2010 season wearing a global positioning system (GPS) unit. Simple mediation modelling was used to analyse the inter-relati… Show more

“…was analysed and as such, quarter breaks and interchange periods for each player were omitted prior to analysis. The criterion variables used to quantify the physical profile of players were similar to previous research, 12 and were thus inclusive of absolute distance (m), relative distance (m.min -1 ), high speed running distance (distance (m) > 15 km.hr -1 ) and high speed running distance expressed as a percentage of total or absolute distance (% total). Previous work has suggested that these variables appear to be the most clinimetrically robust when compared to other GPS metrics.…”

“…In addition, Champion Data statistics have been used in previous published research (9,15). DGI per minute was used as there was a combination of both senior and reserve grade games used in the data The relationship between physical capacity and match performance in semi-professional Australian Rules Football 10 set which have different duration in total game times.…”

“…Coaches' votes as a measure of match performance has been used in previous research (15,23). Mooney et al (15) used coaches' votes as a measure in their research stating the score was used to quantify the player's subjective performance which encompasses both tactical and technical performance.…”

“…First, athletes are required to reach several peaks of performance for many competitions at specific times in a single competitive season (Bompa and Carrera, 2005), and so strategies must be developed to facilitate fast recovery and lower the variability of between-competition performance (Müehlbauer et al, 2010). Second, coaches and athletes typically pursue highintensity training (HIT) and high workload in a practice, because HIT performance, such as high intensity running performance [i.e., concurrent repeated, high-intensity activity (RHIA) and repeated-sprint activity (RSA)], is crucial to success in team sports (Austin et al, 2011;Mooney et al, 2011;Gabbett et al, 2013). To maintain an effective HIT volume and to avoid hyperthermia, swift body cooling and recovery is thus necessary.…”
