Abstract: It is likely that discussion of recreational or exercise involvement may provide a useful point of entry for facilitating dialogue among adolescents about concerns relating to body image and self-esteem. In terms of psychotherapeutic applications, physical activity has many additional rewards for adolescents. It is probable that by promoting physical fitness, increased physical performance, lessening body mass and promoting a more favourable body shape and structure, exercise will provide more positive social … Show more

“…For instance, long-term voluntary exercise increases measures of selfesteem (Morgan, 1982;Waade 2004) and well-being (Norris et al, 1990;Muller et al, 2006) and decreases measures of depression (Veale et al, 1992;Dunn et al, 2005) and anxiety (Antunes et al, 2005 Manger andMotta, 2005). Not surprisingly, epidemiological studies report that participation in activities that promote physical fitness is associated with a lower incidence of tobacco and substance use among adolescent populations (Field et al, 2001;Kirkcaldy et al, 2002). Despite these promising epidemiological findings, remarkably little clinical and laboratory data exist that support a causal relationship between aerobic exercise and a decreased propensity to engage in drug-seeking behavior.…”

“…Higher levels of self-esteem are associated with increased self-efficacy, body image, and leadership, and reduced levels of depression and anxiety [5,9]. As outlined in recent reviews [2,5,10], few studies have examined the link between physical activity and self-esteem among adolescent girls, and no studies have tested the direction of this association. Given the low rates of physical activity participation in this population [11], these are important questions to address.…”
