The Relationship Between Personality Traits and Coping Styles Among First-Time and Recurrent Prisoners in Poland

Abstract: Individuals with certain personality traits employ adaptive coping strategies. Little research, however, has examined coping strategies among incarcerated individuals. “…This result concurs with previous research that asserted the factors of conscientiousness and positivity as personal factors that protect against stress (Caprara and Steca, 2005;Caprara et al, 2017;Greene et al, 2020) and as predictors of adequate learning processes (Biggs, 1970b). Previous evidence showed a positive, partially predictive relationship between different factors of the SLPS competency and the variables of deep approach, academic behavioral confidence, problem-focused coping (Leszko et al, 2020), positive emotions, and resilience (de la Fuente et al, 2017aFuente et al, , 2019b.…”

“…Furthermore, our results seem to support the knowledge that deep-rooted health anxiety is difficult to change because it is closely related to certain coping mechanisms. It was also addressed in the literature that personality traits may have a significant influence on the coping strategy used by a person [ 53 ], revealing sophisticated and challenging links to be considered especially during training programs on effective coping and management skills. On the other hand, perceived stress which has risen significantly above the average level in the current pandemic, can be most effectively targeted by the well-formulated recommendations and advice of major international health organizations if people successfully adhere to them (e.g.…”

“…For example, personality type can influence the severity of the stressor experience by facilitating or constraining use of coping strategies (Bolger & Zuckerman, 1995; Connor-Smith & Flachsbart, 2007). Additionally, effects of personality on coping are facilitated by their level of engagement with stressors, and similarly their approach to rewards (Connor-Smith & Flachsbart, 2007; Leszko et al, 2020).…”
