The relationship between performance on mathematical word problems and language proficiency for students learning through the medium of Irish

Abstract: Ireland has two official languages-Gaeilge (Irish) and English. Similarly, primary-and second-level education can be mediated through the medium of Gaeilge or through the medium of English. This research is primarily focused on students (Gaeilgeoirí) in the transition from Gaeilge-medium mathematics education to English-medium mathematics education. Language is an essential element of learning, of thinking, of understanding and of communicating and is essential for mathematics learning. The content of mathemat… Show more

“…Although this finding (lack of any adverse effect on literacy test scores and negative effects on maths) may initially seem counterintuitive, it is in line with the educational literature's claim that language is essential for mathematical learning (Ríordáin and O'Donoghue, 2009), which is supported by evidence that students underachieve in mathematics when school language differs from 8 Betts and Fairlie (2003) coined the expression 'native flight' to describe the tendency of native-born Americans to leave public schools for private alternatives following an increase in immigration share in their home communities. 9 The coefficient and standard error are -0.22 and 0.175, respectively.…”

“…Disciplinary literacy, or content-area specific literacy, consists of literacy skills and knowledge that support students' understanding of concepts related to a particular field of study, such as science and mathematics. Evidence for this support was found at primary level (Vilenius-Tuohimaa, Aunola, & Nurmi, 2008;Walker, Zhang, & Surber, 2008), at secondary level (Korpershoek, Kuyper, & Van der Werf, 2015;Ní Ríordáin & O'Donoghue, 2009) and at tertiary level (Pretorius, 2002).…”

“…The first must be reached to avoid the disadvantages of bilingualism, and the second must be reached for the advantages associated with bilingualism to emerge. Several studies set out to verify the claim and found evidence in its support, including in relation to mathematical learning (Clarkson & Galbraith, 1992;Ní Ríordáin & O'Donoghue, 2009).…”
