The Relationship Between Performance on the Multi-Focus Assessment Scale and Functional Status

Abstract: This study examined the discriminant validity of the Multi-focus Assessment Scale (MAS). The MAS was administered to three groups of older adults varying in ability to live independently: Extended Care in-patients; Assessment Clinic out-patients; and independently functioning elderly. Analysis of variance showed strong group differences on all of the scales. Discriminant function analysis indicated that the MAS variables predicted group membership with a high degree of accuracy. Replications using random sampl… Show more

“…The MAS-R is a revision of the original MAS (Tuokko, Crockett, Holliday, & Coval, 1987) and consists of seven scales (early memory and present orientation measure cognitive function; social behavior skills; auditory capability; visual comprehension; expressive language skills; and accessability). Social behavior skills (0-11 point scale) and expressive language skills (i.e., ability to effectively communicate on the basis of speech, language production, and comprehension assessment; 3-15 point scale) were considered outcomes because they can potentially be affected by quality of care.…”

“…The Mood (MAS‐Mood) subscale is a measure of positive mood, and the Accessibility (MAS‐Accessibility) subscale measures capacity to attend to conversations or instructions. The Multifocus Assessment Scale has been shown to have satisfactory reliability and validity 14 , 15 . High scores on the Multifocus Assessment Scale are indicative of good functioning.…”
