The relationship between obstructive sleep apnea syndrome and obesity: A new perspective on the pathogenesis in terms of organ crosstalk

Abstract: IntroductionObstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS) is a common disorder that has a major impact on public health. The connection between OSAS and obesity is very complex and likely represents an interaction between biological and lifestyle factors. Oxidative stress, inflammation and metabolic dysregulation are both actors involved in the pathogenesis of OSAS and obesity. Also, the current evidence suggests that gut microbiota plays a significant role in the emergence and progression of some metabolic disorder… Show more

“…The interaction between OSAS and obesity is very complex, and their coexistence may negatively influence the severity of both conditions, creating an interleaved vicious cycles. Systemic inflammation, oxidative stress, metabolic affection, and gut microbiota have a synergistic role in determining the pathogenesis of these two diseases [116].…”

“…Abdominal pressure is increased due to visceral fat accumulation. OSAS is believed to contribute to weight gain, while obesity also leads to OSAS [71]. OSAS is strongly associated with metabolic diseases such as insulin resistance, type 2 diabetes mellitus, NAFLD, and obesity which represent high-risk factors for cardiovascular disease, hypertension, arrhythmia, stroke, and coronary heart disease [8, 72].…”

“…Folglich ist es nicht verwunderlich, dass adipöse Patienten eine hohe Rate (40-90 %) an OSAS aufweisen. Weiterhin geht man davon aus, dass das OSAS selbst ein möglicher Faktor für eine Gewichtszunahme ist [46].…”
