The Relationship Between Locus of Control and Mental Health Status Among Baccalaureate Nursing Students in Turkey

Abstract: In this descriptive cross-sectional study we explored the relationship between locus of control (LOC) and mental health status of students enrolled in a four year Bachelor of Science in Nursing program that uses problem-based learning. There was a significant, positive, moderate relationship between the general health and LOC scores. First-and second-year students had lower internal LOC and were at higher risk of mental health problems, compared to third-and fourth-year students, suggesting that they require i… Show more

“…Therefore, the combination of low job control and high job demands leads to the highest levels of stress. Several studies have pointed the LOC as a predictor of mental health (17,(21)(22)(23). These studies have indicated that external LOC leads in higher risk of developing mental health problems such as anxiety and depression.…”

“…Duman and Çankaya (2006) found that the internal LOC levels of third-and fourth-grade students were significantly different from those of first-grade students. Likewise, Karayurt and Dicle (2008) found a significant difference in mean LOC scores of students in different years of a program, with a greater tendency towards internal LOC among third-and fourth-year students. However, at the end of a 12-week problem-based learning (PBL) course, Martin, West, and Bill (2008) found that their participants' internal LOC increased, although this increase was not statistically significant.…”
