The relationship between isokinetic strength and functional performance tests in patients with knee osteoarthritis

Abstract: [Purpose] The main purpose of the study was to examine the relationship of a battery of frequently used functional assessment tests with quadriceps and hamstrings isokinetic strength in Knee-osteoarthritis (OA) patients. Secondarily, the predictability of isokinetic strength on these performance variables was also assessed. [Subjects and Methods] Seventeen males and 23 females with Knee-OA, were assessed via a) the common functional tests: 6-minute walk test, Timed up-and-go test, 30-second chair test and 12-s… Show more

“…12 Quadriceps' strength is strongly, statistically significantly correlated with the total number of completed chair stands in 30 seconds. 35 Meanwhile, the hip abductor might play a role in the stabilization of the femur and pelvis, which could explain the additive role of hip abductor strengthening in improving performance in the stair climbing and walking tests.…”

“…Consequently, we used 90 and 180°/s velocities in this study, which were also commonly used for elderly and KOA. 33 The participants were encouraged to move as forcefully as possible. The peak torque (PT, Nm/kg) and peak work (PW, W/kg) normalised by body mass were recorded for analysis.…”

“…It is divided into six subscales (sleep, mobility, energy, pain, emotional reactions, and social isolation) and consists of 38 items [ 18 ]. The Timed Up and Go Test (TUGT) [ 19 ], 6-minute walk test (6MWT) [ 20 ], 30-second chair stand test (30-s CST) [ 21 ], and stair climb test (SCT) [ 22 ] were done to evaluate functional mobility. The 6MWT was performed in a 30-meter-long corridor, and measured the total distance walked in meters over 6 minutes [ 23 ].…”
