The obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS) may be associated with several eyes disorders, among which the most common is the floppy eyelid syndrome (FES). We intended to highlight the association between OSAS and FES and evaluate the effect of FES treatment with Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP).A 50-year patient with a 10-year history of snoring, sleep fragmentation and daytime sleepiness associated with several comorbidities has been studied. For six months, several ocular symptoms were present, particularly on waking up in the morning. An overnight respiratory polygraphy was performed at baseline and after CPAP titration.The treatment with CPAP corrects apnea/hypopnea events and rapidly improves patient's daytime sleepiness and eyes FES-related symptoms. This improvement is already evident after a very short period of treatment.

Purpose To study the prevalence, risk factors, and morbidity of eyelid laxity in a veteran population Design Prospective, cross sectional study with retrospective chart review Participants 150 subjects were evaluated from either an outpatient eye or a geriatric clinic at the Miami Veterans Affairs Hospital from June through August 2013. Methods Clinical data were gathered from a questionnaire and a computerized medical record system including demographics, medical history, and ocular irritation history. Upper and lower eyelid laxity was clinically graded. Main Outcome Measures The prevalence of eyelid laxity, risk factors for its presence, and its correlation to ocular surface symptoms. Results Fifty-four percent of participants (n=81) had laxity (grade 1 or higher) in either the upper and/or lower eyelids. Risk factors for eyelid laxity in our population included older age, higher body mass index (BMI), and a diagnosis of sleep apnea. Patients with any eyelid laxity (grade 1 or more in any eyelid) had a 2.23 fold risk of severe ocular surface symptoms (score of 12 or higher on the Dry Eye Questionnaire 5) compared to those without laxity (95% confidence interval (CI) 1.15-4.31, p=0.017), and this was primarily driven by the presence of upper eyelid laxity. Conclusions We found a high prevalence of eyelid laxity in our population, and its presence was associated with significant ocular surface morbidity. This study reinforces the need to incorporate dynamic eyelid testing into the ophthalmic exam in patients with ocular surface discomfort.

G Ge er re eç ç v ve e Y Yö ön nt te em ml le er r: : Uyku bozuklukları merkezinde polisomnografi cihazı ile inceleme sonucunda TUAS tanısı konulan 54 hasta çalışma kapsamında değerlendirildi. Hastalardan anormal solunum olayı indeksi 5-29 olan 21'i grup 1, >29 olan 33'ü ise grup 2 olarak sınıflandırıldı. Hastalar göz kapağı hiperlaksitesi ve gevşek göz kapağı sendromu(GGS)varlığı yönünden değerlendirildi. Gruplar elde edilen veriler açısından karşılaştırılırken, verilerin anormal solunum olayı indeksi, ortalama ve minimum oksijen satürasyonu ile olan ilişkileri de incelendi. B Bu ul lg gu ul la ar r: : Grup 1'deki hastaların %19'unda, grup 2'dekilerin %39,4'unde göz kapağı hiperlaksitesisaptandı. Göz kapağı hiperlaksitesi grup 2'de grup 1'e kıyasla iki kat fazla görülmesine karşın aradaki fark istatistiksel olarak anlamlı değildi (p=0,204). Gevşek göz kapağı sendromu grup 1'de hiç-bir hastada saptanmaziken, grup 2'de %21,2 oranında saptandı. Aradaki fark istatistiksel olarak anlamlı-yidi. (p=0,035). Göz kapağı laksitesindeki artış ile anormal solunum olayı indeksi'nin pozitif, minimum Oksijen satürasyonun ise negatif korelasyon gösterdiği saptandı (r=+0,250, r=-0,259). GGS varlığı ile anormal solunum olayı indeksi arasında pozitif korelasyon bulundu (r=+0,352).
