The relationship between expressive language level and psychological development in children with autism 5 years of age

Abstract: The age of detection of autism varies and may be linked to differences in the severity of disturbance and any associated retardation. Symptom intensity, overall language level, age of recognition of first disturbances and level of psychological development were examined in 222 children with pervasive developmental disorder with a mean age of 5 years. “…Delays in expressive language development, poor social use of language, and unusual speech patterns such as echolalia and dysfluences have been well established in children with autism [67][68][69][70][71] and in children with FXS [72][73][74][75][76]. However, comparatively few studies have compared language performance across both groups in the same study.…”

“…Furthermore, estimates of intellectual level based on global indicators, such as DQ or IQ, are rooted in normative concepts that are not very useful in pathological development. This lowers the diagnostic and prognostic power of these variables in the case of autism (25). In fact, there are no developmental studies of autistic children that focus on the impact of the specifics of each individual cognitive profile, or that address the extensive heterogeneity of autistics as reflected by their wide range of scores on psychometric tests.…”
