The relationship between environmental cost on organisational performance and environmental management system: a structural equation modelling approach

Abstract: Purpose This study aims to examine the relationship between environmental cost (EC) on organisational performance (OPM) through an environmental management system (EMS) as the mediating variable. Design/methodology/approach A total of 2,600 manufacturers were identified and consequently selected as the entire study population. Additionally, this study used the structural equation modelling technique to identify the mediator effects of EMS between EC and OPM. Findings The EC and EMS relationship on OPM prod… Show more

“…Their empirical analysis highlights the direct and mediated effects these factors have on improving sustainability within organizations, offering insights into the broader implications for public sector entities seeking to enhance their environmental governance. In a similar vein, Fuzi et al [2] delve into the relationship between environmental costs, organizational performance, and the implementation of environmental management systems. Through structural equation modelling, their study elucidates the positive impacts that proactive environmental management can have on organizational efficacy, suggesting a pathway for public sector organizations to integrate environmental considerations into their operational frameworks.…”

“…Several studies around the world stress the importance of implementing environmental costs in their processes, as they recognize the negative impact of poor environmental management in different industries (Arendt et al, 2022;Mohd Fuzi et al, 2022;Valarezo-Vera & Solís-Muñoz, 2023). Cheng Z & Li (2022) reveals that rising environmental costs can drive green industrial growth, through structural and technological effects.…”

“…The influence on the financial performance of the organizations has been studied through environmental performance (Deb et al, 2023), environmental management strategy (Mohd Fuzi et al, 2022), management accounting systems effectiveness (Abu Afifa & Saleh, 2022), environmental innovation and environment-related skills for the circular economy (Scarpellini et al, 2020). The mediator variables, such as EMA and a firm's ecological strategy, impact financial performance , product innovation, and process innovation (Saeidi & Othman, 2017).…”
