The Relationship Between Developmental Coordination Disorder and Concurrent Deficits in Social Communication and Repetitive Behaviors Among Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder

Abstract: Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), characterized by core deficits in social communication and restrictive behaviors, can exhibit concurrent motor incoordination and/or intellectual disability (ID). While pervasive delays in motor behavior are common, formal diagnosis of Development Coordination Disorder (DCD) is uncommon. It is not clear how DCD and ID impact core deficits in ASD. This study utilized the Simons Foundation SPARK cohort to describe the scope of motor incoordination among children with… Show more

“…FM and gross-motor, multilimb coordination/ planning skills are related to cognitive impairments in children with ASD FM (r = À0.39, effect size = 0.99) and gross-motor skills (multilimb coordination/planning (CDM2), r = À0.29, effect size = 0.77) were more associated with, predictive of, and explained cognitive variations in children with ASD. Motor impairments are greater in magnitude and/or prevalence in children with ASD with cognitive impairment compared to those without (Green et al, 2009;Licari et al, 2019;Bhat, 2021;Ketcheson, 2021). It is important to note that motor impairments are observed across the autism spectrum regardless of IQ (Jansiewicz et al, 2006); however, children with accompanying cognitive impairment have more motor difficulties.…”

“…Developmental disabilities result from lesions on the developing nervous system, and manifest various limitations in function in one or more domains, including cognition, motor ability, vision, hearing/speech, and behavior 1) . People with developmental disabilities often have impairments in muscle tone and/or muscle weakness and uncoordinated movement, resulting in decreased stability and balance, and decreased ability to perform daily functional activities [2][3][4] . They also typically have other impairments, such as sensory or cognitive impairments and problems in social relationships, that are related to their ability to carry out daily functional activities [5][6][7] .…”
