The Relationship between Conversion Factors and Health: Evidence from the Ready-Made Garment Workers in Bangladesh

Abstract: This study examined the association between health condition and conversion factors (i.e. environmental, individual and social) among workers in the ready-made garment (RMG) industry in Bangladesh. It used data gathered from a cross-sectional survey of 775 RMG workers in the Dhaka and Narayanganj districts. “…Prior studies, therefore, raised the concerns and the issues of governance, ethics and labour unions managements, and factory safety in a context of fast industrial expansion (As-Saber, 2018; Ashraf & Prentice, 2019; Rubya, 2015). Also, the relationships among physical health, job security, promotion, social status, working conditions, sexual harassments and salary of the RMG workers received academic attention and focus (Nasrin, Rasiah, Baskaran, & Khan, 2018; Rahman, 2014; Ramesh Kurpad, 2014). “…Maternal education was recoded and collapsed into a dichotomous variable (primary education or less/more than a primary education) due to small numbers in the higher education categories. This categorization is consistent with other studies from Bangladesh [38][39][40]. We used a locally validated dishbased semi-quantitative food questionnaire (FFQ) to collect dietary information [41].…”

“…First, we randomly chose four universities from the list of permitted universities on the University Grants Commission of Bangladesh website. Second, after obtaining complete lists of students from the universities,† we had to draw a random sample of 385 students using Cochran's formula, conceiving a 5% margin of error at the 95% confidence level and a population proportion of 0.5 following a previous study 21 . Being precautious about the nonresponse bias, we randomly selected 417 students from the list by generating random numbers through a popular random number generator, namely, Calculator.…”
