The Relationship between Cognitive Emotion-Regulation Strategies and Resiliency in Advanced Patients with Cancer

Abstract: Background: Resiliency is a very important component in chronic diseases like cancer. Therefore, investigating factors affecting resiliency seems to be necessary. The current study investigates the relationship between cognitive emotion regulation strategies (CERS) and resiliency, on one hand, and the CERS role in predicting resiliency, on the other hand, among the studied population. Methods: In a correlational method, 121 patients with advanced cancer, who have hospitalized in January 2015 to July 2015 in AL… Show more

“…This result obtained from the research supports the current research results in the literature. Similarly, in these studies, it was determined that there is a positive and significant relationship between resilience and emotion regulation skills (Baghjari, Saadati, & Esmaeilinasab, 2017;Mestre, Núñez-Lozano, Gómez-Molinero, Zayas, & Guil, 2017;Pendergast;2017;Arici-Özcan, Çekici, & Arslan, 2019;Karimi & Esmaeili, 2020;Seçim, 2020). In addition, resilience is expressed as the ability of individuals to cope with difficulties in order to adapt (Rutter, 1987;Masten, Best, & Garmezy, 1990;Wagnild & Young, 1990;Wagnild &Young, 1993).…”

“…For example, Garcia et al (2021) showed that self-compassion supports self-care, as well as improves psychosocial wellbeing. Developing strategies that are useful for self-care (Li et al, 2016;Zhang et al, 2017;Edward et al, 2019) and positively dealing with thoughts and emotions can help patients reduce their mental burden, achieve better resilience (Lim et al, 2014;Baghjari et al, 2017), and improve the quality of life (Li et al, 2016;Zhang et al, 2017;Edward et al, 2019).…”

“…Self-compassion, awareness of common humanity and treating oneself with kindness are all relevant to a patient's self-care, as these skills can potentially help to ease suffering (Garcia et al, 2021). These actions can also enhance the use of adaptive emotion regulation strategies, such as cognitive reappraisal, which can gradually improve resilience (Baghjari et al, 2017).…”

“…Evidence (Garnefski & Kraaij, 2006;Jinyao et al, 2012) has shown that the CER strategies used by an individual during the experience of stressful life events (such as breast cancer) can affect the initial and subsequent progression of emotional response. Researchers (Baghjari et al, 2017;Garnefski et al, 2001;Li et al, 2015;Onyedibe & Ifeagwazi, 2019;Wang et al, 2014) have demonstrated that adaptive CER is essential to the well-being of cancer patients, whereas maladaptive strategies are not.…”
