The Relationship between Chinese Construction Workers' HIV/AIDS-Related Knowledge, Attitudes and Behaviour: A Structural Equation Model

Abstract: This study explored the relationship between human immunodeficiency virus/ acquired immune deficiency syndrome (HIV/AIDS)-related knowledge, attitudes and behaviour in migrant urban construction workers using structural equation modelling (SEM). A cross-sectional study was conducted among 428 male subjects on three building sites in Shenyang City. The SEM model of HIV/AIDS-related knowledge, attitudes and behaviour was built using LISREL version 8.5 and it fitted the data well, as shown by an adjusted goodness… Show more

“…In the fields of environmental protection and public health, however, the relationship between knowledge and attitude has been widely measured. Many studies have proven that a strong and positive relationship exists between knowledge and attitude (Arcury 1990;Bradley, Waliczek, and Zajicek 1999;Qu et al 2009;Tolvanen et al 2012). Bradley, Waliczek, and Zajicek (1999) showed that students with higher environmental knowledge scores had more favorable environmental attitudes than students with lower knowledge scores, both before and after exposure to a 10-day environmental science course.…”

“…We use structural equation modeling (SEM) as the key modeling technique to analyze the complex relationship between different types of knowledge, attitudes, and acceptance, and control for socioeconomic variables. We measure people's subjective and reasoned knowledge, attitude, and acceptance via 5-point Likert scale indicators, and SEM has advantages in analyzing this kind of survey data (Qu et al 2009;Tolvanen et al 2012). First, SEM can diminish the impact of inevitable measurement errors in a survey (Kline 2015).…”

“…The construction industry has the dominant characteristics of being highly labor-intensive and requiring learning by doing, while it does not impose high requirements of education and professional skills for job candidates [ 14 ]. In this setting, the construction industry has become a common destination industry for migrant labor workers with low non-agricultural technical attainment [ 15 ]. The general traits of migrant construction workers include their mainly low educational level and their engagement in heavy labor and short-term work [ 16 , 17 ].…”
