Abstract: This study indicates that CSA alone is not a causative factor in the development of alcohol abuse among women and highlights the importance of examining the family background of women with alcohol problems.

“…The lack of association between age of onset of physical or sexual abuse and substance abuse in women contradicts other findings that childhood abuse (and earlier onset of violence) is associated with greater risk of substance abuse problems as adults (Bennett & Kember, 1994;Fleming, Mullen, Sibthorpe, Attewell, & Bammer, 1998;Medrano, Zule, Hatch, & Desmond, 1999;Miller, Downs, Gondoli, & Keil, 1987;Miller, Downs, & Testa, 1993;Spak, Spak, & Allebeck, 1998;Walker et al, 1999;Wilsnack, Vogeltanz, Klassen, & Harris, 1997). These studies differed from the study reported here in that they either did not account for the possibility of abuse occurring in adulthood or they measured the risk of developing alcohol abuse, not substance use consequences.…”

“…Previous studies have documented that childhood sexual abuse, random unexplained parental anger, and running away are predictors of posttraumatic stress disorder during adulthood (Bassuk et al 2001;Litz and Roemer 1996;Polusny and Follette 1995;Rowan et al 1994). Childhood sexual abuse is also associated with adult substance abuse (Fleming et al 1998;Miller, Downs, and Testa 1993;Polusny and Follette 1995 table 3). …”

“…Therefore many childhood abuse survivors reach adulthood without having received help for their trauma (Briere, 1992;Herman, 1992;Schetky, 1990). Adulthood problems associated with childhood abuse are diverse, including substance misuse, posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), depression, shame, self-harm (e.g., cutting ), eating disorders, isolation, dissociative problems, impaired ability to be intimate or sexual, parenting de cits, and retraumatizing adult relationships (Alexander et al, 1998;Briere, 1992;Browne & Finkelhor, 1986;Courtois, 1988;Feiring, Taska, & Lewis, 1996;Fleming, Mullen, Sibthorpe, Attewell, & Bammer, 1998;Harvey, 1996;Herman, 1992;Hurley, 1991;Rorty, Yager, & Rossotto, 1994;Terr, 1983;van der Kolk, McFarlane, & Weisaeth, 1996;Weiss, Longhurst, & Mazure, 1999;Wyatt, Guthrie, & Notgrass, 1992).…”
